To continue with our example above, say I have 20 citations. The cross reference does work in tying the superscript to the original footnote citation, but if you add a new footnote citation early in the document, only primary footnote citations are updated, none of the cross referenced secondary citations are updated. Now, I have tried experimenting using the cross reference feature to see if that would cause secondary usage of a footnote citation to be automatically updated. All the superscripts have to be scanned through and manually increased by one. Unfortunately, if and when I ever add a new citation early in the document, only the initial time I added any given citation footnote is updated. As of now I have handled this by just manually inserting a superscript with the number. The problem comes in when I want to reference the same footnote again. So if I have twenty citations, and I insert a new citation between the 15th and 16th citation, the new insert now becomes 16 and everything after it is bumped up by one. If you end up adding a new citation prior to other citations, all the numbers are updated accordingly. That works well for the first time you cite something.

These references were initially created by inserting footnotes. Some citations are used multiple times throughout the document.
